Even in sports? A sports ball in an arena is considered equal property. Anyone potentially has the right to it at any given action sequence. Say the Quaterback throws a pass and the defenders intercepts the pass the returns it for a touchdown. Within the laws of the sport that isn't stealing the ball. Now lets say the defender intercepts the pass then runs home with it and play Nintendo. Then that is stealing the ball. The same could be said if a player chooses to hold on to the ball for a period of time they aren't eligible to have the ball or if they just take the ball and run around aimlessly with it delaying the game. These would be examples of stealing.
