It could simply be a matter of machismo where he thinks that he'll win because he's undefeated / the toughest in his villain, etc. They probably won't. But they could keep the idea of him assuming that he'll win, learning from them, dressing like them, and so forth without it being directly sexist.

But why?

Never understood people's desires to try to get rid of character flaws in people that aren't antagonists. Humans have flaws and It's far more common that good people portray bad traits rather than villains who do.
