The returns on that advertising might currently be failing to make up for the costs (even that's debatable as movie viewership is falling for other reasons too), at the end of the day Disney is talked about more. Their IPs are talked about more, and better recognized. That will help them in the long run --- My sister's dog bit a hole in my Super Mario Land cartridge.
