17. Spirit Halloween (Shudder)

I did it. I watched the movie that takes place in a literal Spirit Halloween.

Spirit Halloween is about a group of kids who decide to spend the night in a Spirit Halloween, but there's a spirit who is trying to escape through one of their bodies that keeps taking over all the spooky stuff inside.

So the first thing that amused me was that the whole thing is very obviously a former Toys R Us. It looked identical to it on the outside aside from the giant Spirit Halloween banner.

But into the movie proper, this felt a lot like one of those 90's kids movies where they're up to shenanigans as children. They hit all the classics like one kid wants to grow up, one kid wants everything to stay the same, the one kid has a crush on a GIRL, another kid is comic relief trying to keep everyone together. You know, the normal stuff you'd expect. It was an easy watch because of that.

But the movie opens up with the guy who gets turned into the Spirit of Spirit Halloween, played by Christopher Lloyd of all people, who is taking over different buildings that can no longer pay their rent, and I had to think that wasn't a coincidence because it was very amusing. Christopher Lloyd also does the voice acting for the different spooky creatures that are actually kind of clever honestly. I'll give Christopher Lloyd this: he's very old but he still puts a ton of life into his performances, even if it's freaking Spirit Halloween.

Oh, and Rachel Leigh Cook was a parent in this movie, who you might know as Tifa Lockhart. Very cool.

So it's not a good movie. Poorly directed. Barebones plot. Just has the novelty of being in a Spirit Halloween. But I didn't really find myself hating it. I kinda liked the little weird gimmicks and creatures they chose to go with. But it's like... there's nothing here, even as a kid's movie. I can see myself liking it more as a kid, and I think a kid sees this on syndication and enjoys it. But it's got all the depth you probably expected.

Bad kid's movie. But still pretty enjoyable.
