It's fair to say that video games are the reason most people come here initially (I came here for FAQs back in the day, but didn't join social discussions until far later), however them still being here does not guarantee they still game.

No, you're correct. It does, however, imply atleast some of Point B: That they have nothing better to do.

Now, to be fair, that could be because they don't have money to travel or anything, so that much money could make a difference. But it also could be that they simply don't have any other hobbies, so they spend a lot of time on message boards on a site dedicated to things they no longer care about, and if that's the case, no amount of money is actually going to fix that, and eliminating one potential hobby seems like a questionable choice.
