11. Veronica (Netflix)

It's about time that I finally got around to this one. It's somehow one of Netflix's crowning jewels of horror and I really don't get it.

The way this movie was marketed was that there were so many people turning this one off before the end that they claimed people were SO AFRAID that they couldn't keep watching. Which, let's be real with ourselves, that's just BS. People probably dropped off because it takes a while to get going and reading subtitles is hard for the regular Netflix user. This was pretty significant at the time though, because Netflix didn't have a ton of foreign films on their American platform. Now, you can barely sift through anything without finding more foreign films than American ones. So a foreign spooky film was easy to sell when it was unique.

But enough about marketing blah blah. Let's get to the summary. Veronica is about a girl named Veronica who plays with a Ouija Board and then is subsequently haunted her and her siblings.

Simple story, simple premise. The short is that I like it. I don't love it though. I think there's some legitimately good, scary scenes and they found good and creative ways to creep you out or scare you. When the movie is good, I like it a lot. But unfortunately, a lot of this movie has a lot of nothing going on that's rather uninteresting. Seeing Veronica go through the motions to figure this out is fine, but it's a bit derivative.

When we get towards the end of the movie, I think it's pulled off rather well. And I think they manage to deliver a mostly satisfying conclusion. I didn't see it coming, but I thought it was pulled off pretty well in hindsight. So I can't hate it.

Ultimately, I didn't get to the point where I was outright bored. And that alone lets me recommend it if you're looking for something that's a bit slow, but satisfying in the end.
