And, to be clear, I have personal experience with this. At my last job, they got a new development lead that I, to put it simply, didn't see eye to eye with. I still did my work well and on time, but they just flat out didn't like me and wanted to replace me with a friend of theirs. Thus, when the opportunity for cuts came, I was one of the first ones they selected for layoffs, and they defended it with "We're paying them too much as it is."

However, I used the company as a reference, even knowing potential new employers may end up speaking with the person in question. And, since the person in question was asked basic questions ("Did you work with X," "Were they laid off for poor work," etc.) they couldn't really lie, so they served as a useful reference, regardless.
