There is more meaning in the ending than you think I didn't even realize Mellie was supposed to be his sister, not his girlfriend. It was only at the end of the movie when I noticed and was shocked by this. It definitely makes sense now why he'd pursue the whole Katherine Waterson mobile doctor. Who by the way would surely question the ethics of accepting what is clearly dirty stolen money as a donation even if it does help her charity work.
