In 4th edition they tried to rectify this by making the dumbest alignment system known to man. I'm convinced they hired a former bioware dev to make it. Then in 5e they said hell with it and scrapped the whole thing and now anything can be any alignment outside of special exceptions. You want to have a lawful good red dragon? Go for it. I'll have to look up the 4e Alignment system, I'm curious how bad it could be... Also I've never stuck to the alignments on the stat blocks... My main campaign has had a couple of good-aligned Liches...
