As a math teacher, I can't help but notice the emphasis on "arithmetic" rather than "mathematics."

On the surface this is clearly an appeal to boomers since the term is fairly antiquated in modern education.

But also, "mathematics" encompasses a lot more than just arithmetic literacy. Mathematics is about logic, reasoning, proof, critical thinking, and questioning assumptions. All of which are higher order thinking skills that would tear a hole in DeSantis' ideal fascist society.
