Rural America is the largest echo chamber in the country (though one could say it's thousands of small echo chambers). You can blame it on education, but these are people who don't have their worldview challenged and don't ever engage with liberals or LGBT folk (to their knowledge) or conservatives with moderate views or any minority races.
