As always, I blame the electorate. Theyre stupidly fickle, and as Ive said in the past theyre far more economically conservative than most of us want to admit. Republicans get punished in every other election for displays incompetence, racism, and a general lack of understanding of basic economic principles. Meanwhile, Democrats get punished during the alternating elections for attempting any semblance of progressive legislation (see: Obamacare, the Civil Rights Act). To the voting majority of this country, trying to help everyone is as bad as, if not worse than, trying to hurt everyone, so long as the former involves higher taxes and the latter pretends not to.
