Now I'm willing to bet one of two things happened: #1. The parent made the story up. Probably at the urging of people like Matt Walsh OR #2. The supervisor made the story up at the urging of people like Matt Walsh
We have the recording so we do know exactly what happened (from the student who wanted to catch the teacher being 'woke'), it's from the very start so you don't have to get too far.

Teacher: "How dare you, you've just really upset someone. Saying things like you should be in an asylum."
Student 1: "I didn't say that. If they genuinely identify as a cat or something then they are genuinely unwell."
Student 2: "Yeah, they are crazy."

... derails from there to the more general "I don't believe in trans" argument, the student tries to mention the cat thing again at the end.

Student: "I haven't said anything at all, but it is because they turn around and say things. So I said how can you identify as a cat when you're a girl?"

but no person actually identifying as a cat is actually acknowledged throughout, it's just the student using the dumb strawman to win an argument and the press is primed to believe it

But yeah all that ever matters is the made-up story and then the public absorbs it and corrections never get the same spread. Student probably indeed used "identify as a cat" because they heard it mentioned before somewhere sure, exactly like how now people are hearing her mention it and internalizing the story as fact as well. It's a cycle that never actually gets publicly refuted.
