It wasn't a necessary requirement to have persistent universe hopping, but at the very least have the main alternate universe they spend most of the movie in be have something more going on in it than "the traffic light colors are flipped", "the dress code sucks", and "Bruce Campbell sells pizza balls", because that's fucking boring. It was pretty cliche, but I will say the memory lane part was a mildly acceptable cliche of "show don't tell" by literally showing. If it were another even lesser movie it would have the character (poorly) talk out that entire sequence. I'm more bothered by the bruce campbell cameo. He was overly aggressive against dr strange, and they went overboard with the joke of having him punch himself for 3 weeks despite the fact that he was just protecting his livelihood. And they passed it off as a humorous moment with the 2 smirking as they're walking away. That little scene instantly rubbed me the wrong way. --- http://i.imgur.com/0UFI0T9.jpg ...
