Can they? Interesting to think about. Its quite possible that they arent allowed to, since by definition theyre meant to be a constitutionally guaranteed service for those who cant afford it privately.

Then again public defenders are already bottom of the barrel service-wise (probably through no fault of their own in many cases) so even if they were required by law to act for this guy theyd just half-ass it.

In Australia they actually check your finances and refuse to provide you with an attorney or you are deemed able to afford one yourself. Is that the case elsewhere?

Also didnt this sort of thing come up recently when no lawyer would represent Trump? In that case did we find out if that scenario technically qualifies him for a public defender if the precious free market cuts him off?
