travel is an activity. hallways are the rooms that you use primarily to travel between locations.

In this case, travel is a means to an end, specifically getting to the place where you want to be to do the things you want to do. Kind of a journey vs. destination sort of deal: the hallway generally is not a destination, rooms generally are.

it's true that other rooms may also serve this purpose to some extent (for example, walking through the living room to get between the kitchen and hte hallway), but this is also true of other rooms.

You can indeed walk through rooms to get to other rooms, as is typical in open-concept designs or any other layout that puts rooms behind other rooms (walking through a bedroom to get to an en suite bathroom being one of the best illustrations of this), but the difference is that connecting rooms is the sole purpose of the hallway (again, outside of using it for storage or something to blur the line).

Someone eating in a living room doesn't mean that dining rooms are not a real room type

It does, however, mean that those people may not need a designated dining room and could consider arranging the room to do something else. Rooms and layouts are flexible and should be configured according to the inhabitants' personal needs and tastes. I'm not about to suggest that something that most would recognize as a hallway shouldn't be used as a room, if those using it feel like it works best for whatever purpose they assign to it. Just that, after the inhabitants of a home have configured rooms according to their wishes, any space that exists primarily to connect other spaces instead of being the site of any household activities would be best described as a hallway and not a room, and that the two are distinct concepts.
