I don't want private police either.But the conceit of this topic is "its fucked up that tax money is used for police settlements." And the response is "unless we go with private police, it always will be."

But those aren't the only two options - as someone mentioned in this topic, settlements could be paid out of malpractice insurance, similar to the medical field (and others). In many of these, the individual has to pay their for their own insurance as a condition of employment by an agency, which could a stipulation of being hired by a police department.
