It's how the name should be pronounced in English (the vowel-consonant-vowel spelling is supposed to make the initial vowel a long vowel). And "Tide"-us makes for a water-related pun, while "Teed"-us is meaningless noise. The Japanese (or at least the ones working on FF) have a history of ruining names, though. Like naming the hero of FFV Butz.
