For how much people try to gas it up it was actually considerably more simple than most other films. Star Wars has always been about the "Hero's Journey" or the "Monomyth." The Last Jedi borrowed extremely heavily from Buddhist parables so it ended up just being white yuppie's first "Eastern Philosophy" class instead.
