It's in the running for most influential shonen battle series.
But at it's peak DBZ is just flat out awesome hype combat. I have no idea how much Toriyama was planning ahead and how much was him winging it, but the arcs always built up credible threats leading to epic showdowns.
The anime just kicked things up a notch with now classic sound effects when they move at high speed, or the sound of their energy blasts.
Great fun, would always recommend.
