Honestly I kind of think Luis's character was a bit too straightforward, like it's very tell-don't-show to have him constantly say "I'm trying to atone for my past actions so I can feel better about myself!", humans aren't normally so self-aware and just speak their motivations out loud like that. And he did it like 3 times! I do like him though and it's still a major improvement over the original.
he may be saying it so much to overcompensate, because thats not exactly the full story.
He does still have his deal with Ada, and was presumably hoping to get his hands on the amber to complete that deal. I think he genuinely does want to help Leon and Ashley, but doing so is also his best chance of getting away from the cult.
