As far as fantasy JRPG characters go, Squall and Tifa are great choices for fighting gunners. I don't agree with the general consensus that seems to be them getting headshot the moment they try to approach. Both of them canonically defeat numerous enemies with bullets, and they both have Advent Children-style mobility to close the gap.
