When the body doesn't make enough insulin, it breaks down fat. Normally this is fine as it's how you lose weight, but diabetic ketoacidosis is a magnitude more worse. They won't have the ability to flush the amount of ketones being produced so they're likely to go into a diabetic coma, at which point their chances of dying unless treated immediately are very high.

You can purchase ketone strips at generally any pharmacy and test your urine for ketones.

I know. I did the keto diet for 2yrs and I would test my ketones with them.

I also took a at home A1C test and came up 5.7. Ive been 5.7 for 10yrs now. Wtf!? It doesnt go up nor down. Thoughts?
