That's quite a bit of correlation messing with causation in that study. Their main factors were: vegan restaurants per capita, vegan meetups per capita, and price of vegan option vs price of meat per lb.

For restaurants, I can see there being 30 vegan joints across the state easily. Hawai'i is big on tourism, and I'm sure there are at least 20 spots in Waikiki alone.

You'd only need a mere 7 or 8 meetups across the state to top the second criteria, which is probably affected by the amount of older retirees that have moved out here over the past couple decades.

And one of their factors being vegan vs meat prices, while not factoring the popularity of stuff like poke, spam, and vienna sausage seen as staples by the locals...

I really wouldn't bet on Hawai'i going even moderately vegan anytime soon.
