They would only be able to trade directly with someone who both has chickens and wants a cow more than they want to keep the chickens. However, if there is something that can be used to represent the value of the cow then the cow can be traded to anyone in exchange for the represented value even if they don't have chickens. Further the represented value can be traded to anyone who is offering chickens but didn't want a cow. Thus opening a larger pool of people who can make an exchange. --- No locked doors, no windows barred. No more things to make my brain seem SKARD.
