Yes, exactly this! 13 Sentinels is really interesting because of that. Things that are major twists for one person can end up being nothing for another and vice versa, and the plot works just as well either way. A lot of games attempt this kind of thing, it'll be very impressive if this game pulls it off. I think Zero Escape generally manages it well but I may just have happened to go through those games in the 'right' way.
