TopicDid Vergil actually think he wouldn't lose to Nero next time?

CONCLUSIVE VERGIL TIER LIST:
(Except Project X Zone and other games where he's just there as a cameo or whatever.)

S TIER: There are no Vergils in the S tier. If you really want to specify that the S stands for SUCKS or SERIOUSLY UNCOOL or SHAMEFUL and fill it with Vergils then sure, go ahead.

A TIER:
DMC3 Vergil: The real deal. The Vergil. Vergil is young enough for his pettiness and poor character to be attributed to factors beyond his control. He can fight, he has his coat and his lucky space rock. He's got the 3 fight themes and they're all pretty solid. For a long time we had a glowing recollection of him, as Nelo Angelo was hardly a fair comparison. Things did change but I'm gonna let the good times weigh heavily on his position.

B TIER:
DMC1 Nelo Angelo: He's not much of a character and even less of a talker but he's a big deal in the chronology of Vergil. A lot of the lame or dumb things he does could be attributed to Mundus controlling him as well as him being driven insane by having to interact with big talking birds and spiders.
Nelo's got the Ultra Violet theme which is pretty great. He looks pretty cool and he can freely warp around without having to lock on to something which you'd think Vergil would want to keep. Nelo mostly earns but spot through things he didn't do which is a concerning omen but he can still be happy with that.

UMVC3 Vergil: This Vergil is being afforded leniency due to his similarities to DMC3 Vergil. But what's different? No honor. He will never challenge any opponent in UMVC3 to a 1 vs 1 fight. Only 3 vs 3 messes where he can take advantage of the distracted. A lot of the time Vergil will be reliant on X Factor, hiding in the back while some combo of Dante, Morrigan, Dr Doom, Dormammu, Zero, Nova, Magneto, Phoenix or even more handle the heavy lifting for him. Vergil only bought one theme to this game, a rendition of Vergil battle 2 from DMC3. Vergil's mental state is probably experiencing some negative effects in this game. On one hand he is able to defeat Dormammu and Shuma Gorath, but he likely already believed he could do that. On the other hand Vergil can be brutalised by Raccoons, regular guys with guns, martial arts enthusiasts and a lawyer. This would be ego destroying for him and explains why he has agreed to forego his code in favor of chaotic 3 vs 3 combat.

C TIER:
DMC5 Urizen: C isn't necessarily a bad thing which means I do have good things to say about Urizen. Let's start with the bad, he's apparently so out of it that you can kill him in the prologue chapter without him thinking to even stand up and fight back. I didn't get into any of his theme songs, he barely has any memorable lines, he's easy to beat and so on.
The good though, where would we be without this guy? Still waiting for a new DMC game probably. I mean think, what if Vergil had split himself into TWO violin mimes instead of just the one and Urizen? Urizen got the ball rolling and got us our next adventure.
There's also a little thing that I enjoy. Sometimes in the second fight with him, you'll break his Yamato shield and deplete 95% of his health. Absolutely catastrophic for him right? Well his response to this is to put up the same Yamato shield he's already seen you destroy and confidently say "WHAT A FUTILE ATTEMPT." You might lump that in with the rest of the Vergil quotes where he's talking himself up, but for me that's a brief moment where the arrogance becomes so excessive it becomes endearing.

D TIER:
DMC4 Vergil: Nelo is a shadow of his former self, V and Urizen are halves of someone. This guy isn't even real. The story Vergil recounts about his time in Fortuna is completely implausible. The moves he gives himself are unconvincing boasts. He could have had Let's Just See as a song which would have been great but that didn't happen in the gameplay. On some warped level we could call DMC4 Vergil a manifestation of Vergil trying to be optimistic and put his shame behind him. It's hard to judge a fictional character designed to cover up whatever embarrassing events took place in Fortuna alongside a list of actual characters. Can't spell unfortunate without Fortuna. He's going in the middle, like a shrug on a body language spectrum.

DMC5 V: It was pretty funny though, wasn't it? The way they did this to Vergil? How they gave him a bunch of talking animals? Made him whip out the book to a random page and obnoxiously read passages without giving his listeners proper context? The dancing and the air violin, the twirling and who could forget his 'taunt' where he has a coughing fit. The time he cowered from a boss, the only forced slow walking segment in the game. A level where they take his petting zoo away and make him extra weak. Eventually turning into DMC5 Vergil. It was harsh but it was funny.

E TIER:
DMC5 Vergil: Here he is. What happened to him? In short, have you seen the Mindy Simmons episode of the Simpsons? Remember that part where Bart goes to a series of doctors and they give him glasses and big shoes and change his voice? That's what they did to Vergil except it was permanent.
Most of the game, his two halves are working independently for the common goal of making Vergil look bad. He appears in person for the last 30 minutes and does a legendary job at damaging his own image through both cutscenes and combat. DMC5 Vergil has a few songs, I don't really go for any of them, Silver Bullet's okay but that's more like a Nero song. Stains Of Time could have been a good song for him.
This is the post Nelo Angelo Vergil. The one recounting DMC3, DMC4 and DMC5's Vergil modes as if they were his own action packed adventures devoid of any sense or proof they really happened. This is the liar. Vergil achieves no success in this game and because DmC Vergil eventually helped bring down Mundus, DMC5 Vergil was on the absolute precipice of being placed beneath his reboot self.
Oh also, being traumatized causes magic talking animals to appear around this guy so after the ego annihilation he received at the end of DMC5 I hope there's some kind of zoo or animal shelter nearby that can lend Dante and Nero a hand because they're gonna be busy.
"I won't lose next time." I suppose that could be true. I mean what does he have left to lose?

DmC Vergil: Or Vorgl or El Vergil or whatever. I'm not fluent in Spanish nor do I read Spanish subtitles so much of this was lost on me. I was able to tell however, that this guy is quite the schemer. He was able to bring Mundus down eventually, he almost took Mundus' place as ruler and he was able to pass his detestably neutered moveset on to DMC5 Vergil. For potentially being behind everything that went wrong, DmC Vergil automatically gets a very low spot. Now like V there are times he was funny, like the time the game called him Weak Vergil or at the end of his Vergil's Downfall DLC where he and his monster friends went for a walk and since there was no DmC 2, we can only assume they got hopelessly lost or maybe like the name of the DLC suggests they all fell off a cliff or down a bottomless pit. It's not enough to counterweight the negatives though.

F TIER:
DMC Peak Of Combat Vergil: I have generously included this to cushion the landing of the two previous entries. This is a mobile game. Last time I checked it had lots of badly translated dialogue, it's full of reused assets and weightless combat. It's got a Vergil and it's got gacha mechanics. Ah well.

And that's Vergil. The embodiment of re-buying a game for another character. On the whole, he's decently cool I guess.
