I can't remember what it was like in 3H, but in the 3DS games I thought the auto equip all function was very reliable for the most part, and felt I could generally use it and then just go. The auto equip logic in this game is baaaaad, I have no idea why it makes the decisions it does, but it's always fucked up. What would drive it to put the Steel Bow +3 AND the Steel Bow om Etie? And this is the least of it's problems.
