TopicDid Vergil actually think he wouldn't lose to Nero next time?

The motivation thing has to be addressed.
Why does Vergil constantly talk about motivation? For years he lead us on. We all took "Now I'm a little motivated" in the same vein as "Heh, I might actually have to put some effort in."
This is not what's happening.

Even in his own egregiously falsified retelling Vergil accidentally makes us privy to this so called concentration meter of his. When it's low Vergil cannot do his moves even in his own exaggerated retelling of events. He fills the meter by landing successful attacks and by walking around.

What this means is Vergil's motivation is not derived from encountering powerful opponents but rather being emboldened by repeated small successes.
This fixation on motivation therefore does not come from a lack of challenge in his life, instead it's Vergil's debilitating confidence issues are what's keeping him from growing and leading him to tell outrageous lies of his exploits, inserting himself into starring roles in other peoples' adventures like he's Gilderoy Lockhart who he probably admires. Each successful hit tells Vergil that maybe, just maybe. He can do it. Unfortunately he can also do a lot of things that he really shouldn't like catching giant red meteor storms with his face, being divekicked repeatedly and flying right into a DDT so his growth has a hard cap.

Now you're probably wondering why Vergil is able to perform moves like Judgement Cut End in his DMC5 boss fights if he requires a lot of positive reinforcement to become capable. I believe it's his fight or flight response substituting for his usual avenues to motivation. Vergil throughout his fights against Dante and Nero is absolutely terrified because he knows deep down that he's a fraud. He knows it's the moment he's been dreading, he's about to get pushed over and deprived of his lunch money.

When they next do a Vs Capcom game the roster picking is going to go down like Tony Hawk's Underground 2. If DMC5 Vergil gets picked it'll only be because exceptionally poor competition, you'll have to put him against the likes of Ethan "Stale Bread: The Person" Winters to make him a preferable alternative. "Do I want the noob? ...Or do I want Vergil "Wheels of fury" Sparda? No more divekicking into Prop Shredders eh Vergil?"

He doesn't even have an end goal be to be motivated about. He just randomly announces that he has felt motivation in small increments.
