Why not both?
Because most people don't live their lives in a way that makes those things logically congruent.

There are plenty of criticisms to be made about PETA, but a lot of popular arguments come from astroturfing.
I'm an intersectionalist and despise PETA because of their flippant use of human issues like racism, misogyny, and neurodiversity in an attempt to further animal liberation. They've also peddled pseudoscience and just generally do kind of suck.

I still offer them critical support in discussions like these, partially because they have helped a lot in fighting cruelty in the realms of fashion, cosmetic and medical testing, and exploitation in circuses and zoos, among other things. They don't get enough credit for that.

But it's mostly because as much as PETA sucks, Rick Berman and the companies who hire him suck infinitely more, to the detriment of human and non-human animals alike. He duped a couple of generations into thinking PETA had death squads stealing puppies and kittens from the clutches of children. He made hearts bleed for hundreds of thousands of animals at the order of companies that know animal rights advocacy will cut into their profit from killing billions of animals annually.

He created an army of unpaid shills who will repeat his propaganda without ever critically thinking about it under the guise of caring for animals while they continue funding systematic animal cruelty.

And he did it in broad daylight! He did it in the age of the internet when anyone could look up him, who he works for and why, then conclude they've been taken for a ride.

If he wasn't such a piece of shit I would honestly admire him.
