but was it actually, iyo?

It at least partly was, but it's always easy to dismiss criticism when you accuse your opponents of being sexist, racist, or otherwise bigoted in some way. Because then you don't have to address what they're saying, you can just argue that what they're saying doesn't matter because it's coming from terrible people.

And when your version of events is being signal-boosted by larger corporations with a vested interest in spinning the situation, it's much easier to push your narrative regardless of whether or not it's actually true.

Of course, there were always bad apples involved in the criticism as well, but if we're honest that describes about 100% of all human behavior. If you only focus on the worst members of any given group, every group ever is going to look like absolute shit.

(As an aside, there were actually people who discussed this same sort of phenomenon in regards to the all-female Ghostbusters, and how the "the movie only failed because everyone on the Internet is sexist!" narrative was blatantly spurred by Sony and how it was provably untrue if you actually did objective research. Studios are discovering that accusations of bigotry are a wonderful shield to defuse all public criticism, and revel in using it - see also Disney.)
