I went 20 years having only seen the first Matrix movie. I watched the other two last year. I still pretend in my head that I didn't.

Now go watch Thirteenth Floor. That's the movie the original Matrix basically killed by coming out two months earlier.

Then, if you haven't already seen it, go watch Dark City, which came out a year before The Matrix, and which probably influenced it to some degree (up to and including The Matrix reusing some of their sets).

Then you can go (re)watch Inception, since Nolan has said all three of those movies were an influence when he made it.
