I just beat Katina Zero

I decided this was a game I should actually pay attention to. Maybe I'll pick it up during the sale.

I've done a fair bit of gaming, but not a ton with my gifts yet. I played Shovel Knight for a little while, but the controls aren't very tight and I just wasn't up for that. Didn't get to Bug Fables yet because I also bought Cosmic Star Heroine, and I can only play one JRPG at a time. Tomomi, though...that was an interesting experience.

So, Tomomi is made by a Japanese developer. The action/cancel are on the wrong buttons and the game defaults to Japanese. But right out of the gate I encountered two problems. The first is that it defaults to Japanese, and the options menu is not immediately available. I eventually found it by fumbling around in the menus, but that was a little iffy. And then I get into the game and...there's no jump button. This is a metroidvania, and it does have a jump button, but all my controller can do is walk left and right. I get a tutorial prompt to hit jump and...well, it told me to hit space. Turns out NONE of the controls are bound to the controller. I thought it was just impossible to play, but I commented in the steam forums and a dev wrote back that I just need to configure my key bindings for controller inputs...which is lol. I had already decided I was walking away from the game, but two days later I came back to try it, and it's actually pretty decent. Very snappy controls, everything happens very quickly. You definitely feel in control of the game with your character, and when you screw up, it's your fault. So yeah, it's not a bad game. I just didn't think so for the first 10 minutes.
