At the end of Episode 7's Tea Party you get flashes of things that make the rest of Episode 7 less 'wholesome', including the implication that Kinzo raped Beatrice II, and Yasu/Beatrice ranting and crying about how they "can't love due to this injury, so they might as well be furniture". Basically, combined with the whole gender confusion thing between Shannon/Kanon and Lion, the answer is that they were born male as "Lion", but after falling off the cliff they got a gender-disfiguring injury.
