I dont think I ever invalidated older films, i questioned whether more recent filmmakers were being disregarded for choices that, while foundational or influential, also represent a time when access to the skills, tools, capital and distribution to produce a film were far more limited.

I believe that film is an evolving conversation just like with literature and that many modern filmmakers have been able to learn from and improve on works from much of the 20th century when the medium was in its cradle.
Film changes over time and there are things that can be done today that couldn't be done decades prior, but I don't think the potential to create a great film as changed at all in the last century. Neither newer nor more equals better. We don't look at paintings and judge how good they are based on the number of colors used, number of techniques used, or how recently they were painted. Maybe a bad example but if I don't elaborate my fifth grade English teacher will give me a D.
