It's really quite depressing. Songs like Heard 'em Say and All of the Lights were incredibly formative to my musical interests and mean a lot to me. Knowing what the man who wrote such powerful songs turns into makes those early albums feel less like treasures from a passionate artist and more like a surreal spiral into a better world which doesn't truly exist. For most of this years-long fall, I kept anticipating a turnaround or realization from him. He's way too smart and talented to allow himself to succumb to such a treacherous worldview. I don't believe he'll reach what I hope anymore. I think this is just the person he is now. A lot of factors have played into it, not all entirely his own fault, but at the end of the day, he deliberately chose to break himself and become the monster he wrote about when he was younger. Shit sucks.
