I think most don't seem to understand that even if you talk to Japanese people in Japan if they are nice and polite in person it doesn't mean they like you.

In Japan putting out a good face and showing honor when dealing with other people especially strangers is a huge part of society, therefore unless you are acting a total fool, causing chaos, or flying in the face of rules that they really love. they will be polite in person but they will be backstabbing assholes to their friends when referencing you.
