12. Hatching (Hulu)

We got Finnish horror, and good god is it ever fucking bizarre.

So Hatching is about a 12 year old girl who has a crappy family that finds an egg in the woods. It hatches into the ugliest bird you've ever seen, and it gets quite awful as it begins to grow.

This film, man. I made the mistake trying to eat during this. It was outright gross at a lot of parts. But it has a lot of solid effects that properly evoke the absolute disgust of some of this. Stuff gets outright grim and gruesome at points, and I was sufficiently creeped out as this thing evolves.

The acting seemed solid, and they really managed to evoke every feeling I had about these shit family members. They're so bad it's funny at this point and I couldn't help but laugh at times at how absurdly awful they are. But that makes for a very good story that works throughout the film and until the very end with the parallels of her being raised by her mother and her raising her own offspring as a mother.

I didn't know what to expect with a Finnish horror, but this felt like exactly what I should have expected. It's a really good movie that I feel is definitely worth checking out. It's pretty creepy as you just wait for the bad stuff to happen and you just know nothing ends well here. The ending was also pretty outstanding story-wise.
