Since some held that longevity was a biological characteristic then Elves could not be immortal (not dying of old age), and Men mortal, and yet sufficiently akin. Tolkien said that he could answer all this by declaring ageing only a theory, but his actual answer was that he did not care: The situation was simply a biological dictum in his imaginary world.
