Also, from what I've been reading online, the shape the alien takes at the end is the way angels are literally described as looking in The Bible.
Oh that was my first thought as well. It was absolutely horrifyingly beautiful. I was also thinking that it reminded me of an old style tripod camera with how it had the tiered rectangle pieces and the circular lens in the center as well as the covering cloth.
