28. La Dama

La Dama is a criminal kingpin based out of El Paso. She is from Juarez. During the course of her criminaling, she got into a rivalry with a woman named Maria and they killed each other's daughters, then Maria became a spirit of vengeance of water named La Llorona, and she took up in Juarez, so there was a big conflict between the two.

El Paso/Juarez was a location for some 5 sessions, and we did our damnedest to end up with the pair agreeing to a ceasefire to take their combined cities down south in a convoy to get to the southern tip of South America so they could ferry across to Antarctica. The Convoy was another 6/7 sessions or so, so La Dama got a lot of screentime.

So who is La Dama? She's a criminal. She used to be a mother. She's practical. La Dama is smart, and always playing an angle. In El Paso, she was clearly the top dog, riding around in a limo with Charaxes (the transformed Killer Moth) riding atop as her guard dog. All meetings took place according to her decisions, and she wanted to hire the party to get rid of waves of azure beetles that were tearing the city up.

Eventually, she got ousted as the Society decided they didn't care for this unaligned criminal empire, and she quickly became a target. We got her to side with us - on the promise that she would be the president of Mexico in a new world order - and in the Convoy she continued to vie for the top spot. She didn't have a tough time with it - she was organized, and La Llorona wasn't a businesswoman - just a spirit of vengeance. Then everything changed when we stopped by Santa Prisca to pick up Bane. Suddenly, La Dama was at a big disadvantage.

She continued to play her cards as best she could, but from the position of not being the top dog, it became less of a puppetmaster situation, and more of a calculated player of chess. The moves became riskier, sometimes more desperate, but more meaningful.

The last thing she did on the convoy, after acquiring a magic acorn from PC's that would imprison La Llorona... was to imprison La Llorona. And save her. This act of mercy was a victory for her, as La Llorona arrived with her to Z'onn Z'orr with the convoy and no longer had a purpose. La Dama had won.

Until Kobra attacked and La Llorona became a protector of our under-ice city, Castling.

Suddenly, La Llorona was a folk hero and had power over La Dama again. The power had shifted... as it had back and forth for awhile.

La Dama is a complex character. She's a criminal, and she's pretty bad, but when La Llorona was killed the first time, La Dama didn't kill all of her children in vengeance - one survivor was set up with a new family. There is some amount of heart to La Dama, or at least, the echo of one.

She's always playing the game and trying to find ways to get ahead. And in this world, that might be more important to have on our side than not. It also makes her someone who we need to be cautious with, as any interaction with her could be negative in result.

Pepper Spray (Vis's character) is a pharmacist and has gotten involved with cooking drugs for the Society, so she's starting to work with La Dama to set up production. Pepper Spray is interesting when she dips more into her villainous persona, as it is very clearly where she is trending, and it results in her more innocent Mormon girl side being eaten up, and La Dama is helping to push that along, so this interaction is one worth watching as it continues.

Also, Brennus technically made a promise to La Llorona that he would help her try to kill La Dama when the time comes, so...

Hint for 27: This character is or has been romantically/sexually involved with another character met in the campaign (could be NPC or PC).
