I don't think either are more popular than Mario tbh, they each got one game with some expansions, right? Mario has multiple unique series

Yeah, I don't see that at all.

I always thought the show/card game just supported the video games more or less

I never knew anyone that loved Pokmon for the show. I guess it's possible, but every Pokmon fan, in my experience, loved it for the video games.

The show came out before the games in the US. Plus kids get into the show sooner than the games.

it's still pikachu

pokemon is the most successful multimedia franchise in the world with a crazy amount of merchandise out there

mario is pretty much just video games and isn't that much more successful gamewise than pokemon is despite its massive head start

Mario is still the bigger name and almost synonymous with gaming.

Didn't Pokemon games outsell Mario games a long time ago?

Nope. Not even close. Pokemon isn't even #2.

But you can wait for adjl to confirm what I already said =p

Mickey is far more recognizable than Pikachu.

Pikachu is the face of the merchandise whether he's in the games that gen or not. And Pokemon merchandise is more successful than Mario games are.

If you deleted everything that wasn't a video game from the universe, yeah, Mario would be more popular, but that's not reality. The 1000+ episode anime was made to support the games, and Pikachu's been one of the two consistent main characters of its entire run. Also I just realized there's more Pokemon episodes than Detective Conan and now I'm all fucked up

Not how it works at all, though. You're looking at it based on sales where a single customer accounts for a large number of sales. Because you don't understand how this works, I'll try to simplify it.

Who's the current WWE champion?

The WWE has grown in terms of revenue year after year after year... and yet it has fewer fans and is less relevant than it's ever been. Sales tell a very incomplete picture. So even though the WWE is making more money than ever before -- by a very large margin -- the wrestlers are less well-known than they were decades ago. And despite the current champion holding the belt for over a year, he's less well-known than guys who held it for a few months.
