Wish I put more effort in learning Japanese. I know like... a bunch of random words, but like with most languages, I don't know crap for verbs or grammar. Probably because I struggled with even Grade 1 Kanji beyond numbers.

Subject, object, verb. Almost no exceptions. You just need to learn particles, onyomi and kunyomi. Honestly, I prefer to learn to speak, then read and write later. Just like any other person does. You have to accept that a child knows more about their language than you do. They also teach kanji based on meaning, not difficulty of writing. Kuruma isnt necessarily an easy kanji to learn, but a five-year-old knows what a car is. There are easier writings (less strokes) for more difficult words/definitions.

I think "why is that" sounds better than "how come" or just "why".

Another approach is to incorporate context into the question.
What is the cause of...
What is the reason for...

Could you explain this?

To a boss, I would definitely say "Sure, but why do you ask?" or something. "How come" isn't always going to come across as polite.

Fair.
