Nuance.

Which sounds nicer to the receivers ear?

I always go with How come? as opposed to Why? or the more proper Why do you ask?

Why? sounds short, and Why do you ask? sounds too formal to me.

Why come

Why not?

I do, on occasion, mis-word sentences like Why for you do that?

"How come" sounds a bit argumentative to my ear. Worse, the words don't make sense.

"Come over here"
"How come?"
"....walk, I guess?"

Whenever someone sings fansa and they don't input their name instead of mona at the mona-beam part I'm like "Are you even a real aidoru?".

I have no idea what this thread was about, thought when entering this thread, and happened to see you post in Japanese.

To say the least, I am lost.

"For what" sounds short also, yes. I would be most likely to say "I'm in the middle of something, can it wait?" ...or just walk over without saying anything. It depends a bit who's asking, though.

And the point of my example was really to point out that the phrase doesn't really make sense, which is an occasional pet peeve of mine. :)

I just feel that Why? is short for responding to a request, and there may be alternatives that I cant think of. I always like to know the purpose of an action.

It definitely depends on the situation. Lets say its your boss asking you to do something, and you want to know why it is that you are doing it; for the sake of experience.

I guess Japanese is interesting here because there are so many more ways you can respond than in English. Or maybe my inexperience with the language is just making me think that there is.

Wish I put more effort in learning Japanese. I know like... a bunch of random words, but like with most languages, I don't know crap for verbs or grammar. Probably because I struggled with even Grade 1 Kanji beyond numbers.

I think "why is that" sounds better than "how come" or just "why".

Another approach is to incorporate context into the question.
What is the cause of...
What is the reason for...

To a boss, I would definitely say "Sure, but why do you ask?" or something. "How come" isn't always going to come across as polite.

Subject, object, verb. Almost no exceptions. You just need to learn particles, onyomi and kunyomi. Honestly, I prefer to learn to speak, then read and write later. Just like any other person does. You have to accept that a child knows more about their language than you do. They also teach kanji based on meaning, not difficulty of writing. Kuruma isnt necessarily an easy kanji to learn, but a five-year-old knows what a car is. There are easier writings (less strokes) for more difficult words/definitions.

I think this is usually why people say it's easier to learn a language if you're living in the country that language is fluent. Like zero reason in my life to actually speak Japanese, but I like to watch karaoke streams on Youtube which and I'd like to understand what streamers are saying a little bit more than I already do. The reason I don't is really just laziness.
