It was novel and proved to be less exciting. Between emptiness and color, the consumer probably chose something with color. MMOs learned this with drab and decayed zones. Even evil classes as their starting point didn't like them and preferred lush green or mystical surroundings instead.

I did however like the clear see-thru phones and electronics. It was neat seeing the guts and clockworks. I had a couple clear N64 controllers.
