Completely modern/futuristic setting complete with global warming allegory, 3D, new magic system, only 3 party members, etc. Believe it or not there were a lot of fans back then who hated what they did with FF7 and though the series should have "stuck with its roots" etc. So I really do understand that line of thinking. Not that I trust modern Square to make anything on par with that today. But I'm fine with doing something completely new and different.
