E-102 Gamma
First Appearance: Sonic Adventure 1

E-102 Gamma is a one and done character, but he's done pretty perfectly. It's a simple, but impactful story and I positively love it.

He looks like a pretty standard, sleek robot boy with a blaster that stands out, but still looks entirely like a total Eggman creation.

And he even acts like a standard Eggman robot too. He's a cold, stoic AI and a lot of it is subtle. He doesn't ever outright say anything he's thinking. You just pick up on it all as the story goes on, which is honestly ambitious for a game like this. It's not groundbreaking in most story mediums, but for freaking Sonic Adventure 1, as jank as it is? That's impressive.

Basically, he's a robot boy who has a bird charging him up like a classic Eggman robot. He's one of many robots, and he works for Eggman. He watches E-101 Beta, we'll say his "brother", and see what Eggman does to mutilate him and make him a more horrible weapon. He sees Amy Rose who tells him about her autonomy and what motivates her and that he doesn't need to obey Eggman. He doesn't buy it until he sees Amy's Birdie friend, who triggers something deep inside him. And then he felt compelled to release Amy. When he tries to kill Sonic later, Amy stops him and he begins to show more humanity and simply spares him.

And then, he decides to break free and rescue the other E-Series robots, freeing the animals inside them. He goes one by one until he's left with E-101, and they fight. And after defeating E-101, it attacks him too, in what I think was E-101 also realizing that Gamma needed freed too. And so seeing a final vision of the family of bird together, he decides not to repair himself and simply lets himself explode, freeing the bird inside him, and allowing them all the be free.

We don't get stories as impactful as this in most of the games now. This is a perfect story arc to explore what it is like for one of Eggman's robots, and it's so much more ambitious than Sonic has any right to be. I think it was meant to be the real emotional story in Sonic Adventure 1, and it provided a unique playstyle that was pretty good.

E-102 Gamma was great. He never needs to be in another game. His story was done as well as it could have been. Give me more of this with these one off characters and I'll take it every time.
