The biggest problem in the Star Wars fandom is that their media managers only seem to know how to throw gasoline on fires.

Star Wars fans are notoriously critical of minitia; that's well known. And when you javelin a media franchise as absolutely, globally ENORMOUS as Star wars, the simple law of probability dictates that you're going to reel in a lot of shitheads. Racists, sexists, psychopathic keyboard warriors sending in death threats. That's what happens when you cast a wide net.

The biggest problem I see is that for the last several controversies the franchise has seen... every single one of them has been made monumentally worse AFTER Disney responds. Kelly Marie Tran, Rey being a Mary Sue, these issues were mostly just rumblings and grumblings until Disney and their outlets closed ranks and plastered callouts all over the front pages of everyone's feed. As we speak, I can guarantee that while Moses Ingraham wasabsolutely getting unwarranted shit before, she's DEFINITELY getting a lot more after Daddy Disney made it a hugely public issue and painted a big old target on her head. Their media managers fundentally don't understand the Streisand effect, and keep sending out giant blaring beacons BEGGING for the worst of the audience to behave even more badly.

Short story, they're feeding the trolls.

And I do believe that a part of this is intentional. By broadcasting and exacerbating the issue, they do give themselves a massive shield from legitimate criticism of their product. Sympathy goes a long way in the market place, and given Disney's historical treatment of their actors, I am under no delusions that any of their mealy-mouthed "solidarity" messages are anything close to genuine.

That said, everyone sensing racist shit and death threats to every woman or person of color are legitimately awful people, and deserve to be called out and much worse. I just think Disney's handling of all of these situations has, historically, only doused the fires with gasoline instead if water.
