If we're talking truly "controversial" results in terms of stuff where people think the result was legitimately tainted, there are only a handful.

You have Samus/Sonic 2002, Mario/Crono 2003, Link/Draven, and that might be it.

(not to say there aren't other results where it seems like blatant cheating was involved, but those have largely been forgotten or just don't get brought up as much. Look at the end of Frog/Axel or Crono/Vincent 2008, or Mario 1/Mario 3/Mario World/Zelda 1, and those late trends are definitely suspicious)
