Turned out I was missing a health refill part of the way through, but even with that I think I still got a Game Over one more time before clearing it. The final boss is one of my least favorite types of boss ~~(completely invulnerable until it arbitrarily does a certain attack after which you have like three seconds to attack)~~ so that was quite a bummer.
